Pinscreen

/ L’écran d’épingles

Documentary

In February 2024, at Ciclic, an animation film residency in Vendôme, I met the pinscreen: a device conceived in 1931 by engravers Alexandre Alexeïeff and Claire Parker, composed of thousands of pins. By sculpting light and shadow across its surface, artists are able to create animated images through successive photographs.

Rooted in a slow, fundamentally material temporality, the pinscreen shapes the very nature of the images it produces. This relationship between device, gesture, and time forms the starting point of my documentary project.
